Ingredients

For the Salad
  • 5 cups ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/3 cup red onion, finely diced
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves torn or thinly sliced
For the Dressing
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

Equipment

  • 1 Cutting board
  • 1 Chef's knife
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 Small bowl for whisking dressing
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 serving spoon

Method

Prepare the Salad
  1. Wash and dry the tomatoes and basil. Chop the tomatoes into bite-size pieces and place them in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Finely dice the red onion and add it to the bowl with the tomatoes.
  3. Tear or thinly slice the basil leaves and add them to the bowl.
Make the Dressing and Finish
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, kosher salt, black pepper, and dried oregano until combined.
  2. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss gently until everything is evenly coated.
  3. Let the salad sit for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, then serve.

Notes

Use the ripest tomatoes you can find for the best flavor. Add basil just before serving for the freshest color. If the onion is sharp, soak it in cold water for 10 minutes and drain well before adding.
